Crossword puzzles (mots fléchés) are a globally recognized word game where players decipher words within a grid using provided definitions. Definitions are given for all rows (horizontal words) and columns (vertical words) of the grid, with intersecting words, hence the name 'crosswords'.

The game is played on a grid that's typically rectangular, composed of white and black squares. Black squares act as separators; any series of adjacent white squares between two black squares on the same row or column represents a word to be found. An exception exists for isolated white squares between two black squares, which do not correspond to words; therefore, crossword creators never provide definitions for these single-letter 'words'.

A crossword enthusiast is called a 'cruciverbiste' (or an 'œdipe'), while the creator of a crossword grid is called a 'verbicruciste' or a 'mots-croisiste' (or a 'sphinx').
