SWAYAM is a groundbreaking initiative by the Government of India aimed at revolutionizing education by addressing the three fundamental principles of the Education Policy: access, equity, and quality. The core objective of SWAYAM is to democratize access to top-tier teaching and learning resources, extending educational opportunities to everyone, with a particular focus on reaching the most disadvantaged populations.

SWAYAM endeavors to bridge the digital divide for students who have been historically excluded from the digital revolution, enabling them to actively participate in the knowledge economy. It achieves this through a domestically developed IT platform designed to host a wide array of courses, spanning from 9th grade through post-graduation levels. This platform ensures that these courses are accessible to anyone, from anywhere, at any time. All courses are interactive, meticulously crafted by the nation's leading educators, and provided free of charge to residents of India. Over 1,000 carefully selected faculty members and teachers from across the country have contributed to the development of these courses.

The courses on SWAYAM are structured into four key components: (1) video lectures, (2) specially curated reading materials available for download and printing, (3) self-assessment tests incorporating quizzes, and (4) an online discussion forum for clarifying doubts and fostering interaction. Significant efforts have been made to enhance the learning experience through the use of audio-visual aids, multimedia resources, and cutting-edge pedagogical techniques. To ensure the production and delivery of high-quality content, seven National Coordinators have been appointed. These include NPTEL for engineering, UGC for post-graduation education, CEC for under-graduate education, NCERT & NIOS for School education, IGNOU for out-of-school students, and IIMB for management studies.
