The Quran, revered by Muslims, is believed to be the literal word of God, not merely divinely inspired.

Muhammad, unable to write, did not author it. Tradition holds that his companions acted as scribes, meticulously recording the revelations. Shortly after his death, these companions compiled the Quran from their written records and memorized verses.

Caliph Uthman established a standard version, the Uthmanic codex, widely regarded as the archetype of the Quran known today. While variant readings exist, they generally involve minor differences in meaning.

Muslims consider the Quran to be God's final revelation to humanity, a divine guide revealed to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel.

Respect for the Quran's written text is a cornerstone of faith for many Muslims, who treat it with reverence. Based on tradition and a literal interpretation of Quran 56:79 ("none shall touch but those who are clean"), some Muslims observe ritual cleansing with water (Wudu or Ghusl) before touching a copy, although this practice is not universally followed.

The Quranic content addresses fundamental Islamic beliefs, including the existence of God and the resurrection. It also includes narratives of early prophets, ethical and legal principles, historical accounts from Muhammad's time, and teachings on charity and prayer. The Quranic verses offer general exhortations on right and wrong, and historical events are recounted to illustrate moral lessons. Verses describing natural phenomena are often interpreted by Muslims as evidence of the Quran's authentiCity.
