Gong Kebyar is the most common and frequently performed type of Gamelan music in Bali. Physically, Gong Kebyar simplifies the older Gong Gede by reducing the role or number of some instruments. The word "kebyar" literally means fast, sudden, and explosive, reflecting the dynamic, loud, and fast-paced nature of this Gamelan style.Gamelan Gong Kebyar features a five-tone scale called laras pelog: nding, ndong, ndeng, ndung, and ndang.
Historically, Gamelan Gong Kebyar emerged in Singaraja around 1915, according to Balinese chronicles. Jagaraga village (Buleleng) is credited as the origin, also initiating the Kebyar Dance tradition. Other accounts suggest Bungkulan village (Buleleng) as the birthplace. The art of Gong Kebyar peaked around 1925 with the arrival of I Ketut Mario, a Jauk dancer from Tabanan, who created the Kebyar Duduk or Kebyar Trompong dance.
