Site Editorial Commentary:AudioTool: Fully Featured SPL, dB and Sone Meter, plus Audio Spectrum Analyzer

AudioTool is a comprehensive SPL (deciBel) Meter app packed with features, including RT60, Leq, Sone, Spectrum Analyzer, Spectrogram, Chart Recorder, Signal Generator, Polarity Checker, and Mic calibration. It's a powerful tool for audio professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Recommended by "Sound and Vision" magazine and loved by Audio Engineers worldwide, as evidenced by rave reviews.

Key Features include: 1/1, 1/3, 1/6 & 1/12 octave RTA modes, Leq (wideband, Octave, variable duration), Sones (Loudness), RT60 (wideband, Octave), Peak Store, Spectrogram, Waterfall display, Peak frequency detection, Impulse response, Fast, Medium & Slow filters, Flat & A/C Weighting and film industry X Curve, Averaging, SPL Chart Recorder, Noise Criteria (NC and NR), White/Pink Noise generation, Sine, Square, Triangle, Sweep, Log Sweep, Warble, Ramp and Impulse signal generation & loudspeaker polarity checker, L/R channel selection. It also features RTA Store & Load, Hann windows for improved accuracy, and pinch-to-zoom/scroll-to-center functionality for detailed analysis.

Recent Updates (April 2019) Highlighted:
v8.0 New Feature: Load and display one or two stored spectrum files alongside realtime data for comparison.
v8.1 New Generator option: Swap phase of Right stereo signal for advanced testing.
v8.2 New Menu option "Set Resolution" allowing users to set sample lengths (4096, 8192, or 16384) for increased precision.
v8.3 New 1/12 Octave RTA mode for finer frequency resolution.

Exclusive ISO 1/3 Octave Calibration allows users to correct for their phone's microphone response, ensuring accurate measurements. Octave calibration discs can be adjusted to obtain a flat response and match the overall SPL to an external meter. Save/Restore of Calibration files is supported, with popular microphones like Dayton Audio iMM-6 and MicW i436 also supported.

Ideal Use Cases: gig measurements, home theater setup and calibration, acoustic analysis, car audio tuning, and more.

AudioTool utilizes FFTs on sets of microphone samples, with aliasing reduced by Hann windowing. SPL is calculated in realtime. Spectra can be saved, loaded, and displayed alongside the live spectrum. The "Store" button saves the current live spectrum, while "Load" displays a list of stored spectra for selection.

Tapping the screen hides/restores the buttons. Pinch to zoom and drag to move the scale for detailed viewing.

A pair of cursors can be displayed, each movable to any position to display SPL & time/frequency values. Cursors can be toggled on/off in the Menu.

The loudspeaker polarity checker verifies speaker wiring: connect the AudioTool output to the speaker, select "Polarity" from the signal generator, then return to the RTA screen. "Pol ---" indicates out-of-phase wiring, while "Pol +++" indicates in-phase wiring.

The Noise Criteria function overlays NC contours on the 1/1 Octave RTA display, showing the calculated real-time current NC value.

The Chart Recorder displays a moving trace of SPL measurements over time.

RT60 measurements (reverberation time) can be performed using the "RT60" function, triggered by a loud clap or Pink Noise from the AudioTool generator.

The Signal Generator produces White and Pink Noise, Sine, Square, Triangle and Ramp waves, Sine Linear and Log Sweeps, Warbles, and Impulses. The generator uses multiple cycled buffers, refreshed randomly for truly random White and Pink noise.

The Signal Generator's frequency accuracy is typically around 1%. Sine wave fidelity is good throughout the audio range. Other signals may exhibit ringing and decreasing frequency response artifacts at higher frequencies, depending on the device.
