Mishkat al-Masabih is a comprehensive collection of Hadith, meticulously compiled and organized in the style of Jami' (comprehensive) books. This valuable resource presents the texts of Hadith, providing judgments on their authentiCity, classifying them as Sahih (authentic), Hasan (good), or otherwise. The book covers a wide range of topics, including beliefs, knowledge, worship, transactions, manners, spiritual matters, tribulations, virtues, and merits. It distinguishes itself from other Jami' books by omitting sections on Tafsir (interpretation of the Quran) and Maghazi (Prophet's campaigns).

The author, al-Khatib al-Tabrizi, held the original 'Masabih' (Lights) in high esteem, stating it to be the most comprehensive and accurate book of its kind. However, he recognized the need for further refinement, leading to the creation of Mishkat al-Masabih. Al-Tabrizi meticulously documented the origins of the Hadith, including the names of the Sahaba (companions) who narrated them, a detail often omitted in the original work. He also expanded each chapter into three sections:

* The first section features Hadith narrated by both or either of al-Bukhari and Muslim.
* The second section includes Hadith from other prominent scholars.
* The third section contains Hadith, even if they are 'Mawquf' (attributed to a companion rather than the Prophet), that relate to the chapter's theme.

Al-Tabrizi himself explained that he structured each chapter into these three sections, prioritizing the Hadith of al-Bukhari and Muslim due to their high standing in the field of Hadith transmission. The third section includes related material from the early and later generations of scholars, maintaining a focus on the core meaning of the chapter.
