Site Editorial Commentary：The emergency information and news app of BBK

NINA (Emergency Information and news App) is your nationwide warning system for potential hazards in Germany, optionally providing alerts specific to your current location. This app is provided by the German Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK).

NINA leverages the modular Warning System (MoWaS) as its technical foundation. The BBK operates this system for nationwide civil protection alerts. Since 2013, all state situation centers and numerous connected control centers in cities and municipalities have also been able to utilize the warning system.

note: Local event warnings may not be available everywhere. Please check with your local district or City to learn about the specific warning methods they employ.

With NINA, you receive:

• Civil protection alerts with recommended actions
• weather warnings from the DWD (German Weather Service) for all districts and cities nationwide
• Flood information nationwide at the state level
• General emergency tips to help you protect yourself and others from potential dangers.

NINA allows you to select specific locations for which you want to receive alerts. These locations are displayed in the "My Locations" overview. In the settings menu, you can configure the alert level at which you wish to be notified via push notifications. You can also optionally receive alerts for your current location. No location data is stored on our servers when using this feature. Please note: NINA needs to determine your location accurately to display location-based warnings correctly. Poor reception may lead to inaccurate displays.

The hazard area of a warning message can be displayed on a map. Flood information is currently only issued at the state level. The map displays all available warning messages, even if you have not selected the location.

The emergency tips provide recommendations on topics such as floods, severe weather, power outages, fires, and special hazard situations. Learn how to prepare for such events. You will also find behavioral guidelines in case you are affected by an event. Get started right away with the practical checklists.

Permissions Information:

Storage Access (Android 8 and higher): The NINA warning app offers the possibility to copy the well-known siren sound to the smartphone. This permission is required to enable this copying. After the copying process is complete, the permission can be removed again. The permission is not required for the warning app to function.

Location: Warning messages for your current location are only possible when using gps, WLAN, and other geolocation services. If you have deactivated these services on your device, you will not be able to receive location-based warning messages.
