Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan), an ancient internal Chinese martial art, is celebrated worldwide for its numerous health benefits. While many practice Tai Chi slowly to improve balance, strength, and vitality, the martial applications of this art are often overlooked. Taijiquan, meaning 'Grand Ultimate Fist', is in fact a highly effective combat method specializing in short and mid-range fighting techniques.

These video lessons provide practical martial applications for each of the 37 postures of traditional Taiji, based on the forms passed down by Yang, Ban-Hou. In China, t'ai chi ch'uan is classified under the Wudang branch of Chinese martial arts, emphasizing the use of internal power (jing) and Qi (energy). The origins of the basic postures in the Yang form can be traced back through Wudang Mountain to the Shaolin Temple, evolving from movements originating in "Chang Quan" (Long Fist). Around 800 AD, the philosopher Xu, Xuan-Ping is credited with developing a long Kung Fu consisting of 37 forms, incorporating common Tai Chi movements such as:

Other contemporary forms like "Heavenly-Inborn Style", "Nine Small Heavens", and "Acquired Kung Fu" also exhibit similarities to what later became Taijiquan. The core principles of softness, sticking, adhering, and redirecting an opponent's momentum were established in these early martial styles. Bodhidharma's teachings at the Shaolin Temple, which detailed the use of the mind to guide Qi for energizing the physical body, are widely regarded as the foundation of all Internal Martial Arts, including Tai Chi.

Dr. Yang's Tai Chi lineage can be traced back to the Yang family through Grandmaster Kao, Tao (高濤) and his teacher Yue, Huanzhi (樂奐之), an indoor disciple of Yang, Chengfu (楊澄甫).
