The primary goal in Spades is for your team to accumulate 500 points. Players form fixed partnerships, sitting opposite their partners. The deal and play proceed clockwise, utilizing a standard 52-card deck. The cards rank from highest to lowest within each suit: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.
In Spades, each player bids on the number of tricks they expect to win. The bids of the two partners are combined, representing the total number of tricks the team aims to secure for a positive score. Bidding commences with the player to the dealer's left and continues clockwise, with each player required to make a bid. A bid of 0 tricks is known as "Nil," indicating the player's intention to win no tricks during the play. A successful Nil bid earns a bonus, while failure results in a penalty. The partnership also aims to achieve the number of tricks bid by the Nil partner. It is not possible to bid no tricks without bidding a Nil. If you prefer not to risk the Nil bonus or penalty, you must bid at least 1.
Spades are always the trump suit, holding the highest value. Each declared trick is worth 10 points. Failing to fulfill the declared trick results in a penalty equal to the trick's entire value. Overtricks, commonly known as bags, are worth 1 point each and contribute to your "bag" count. Every set of 10 bags incurs a 100-point penalty. Successfully winning a Nil bid awards 100 points, while failing a Nil bid incurs a 100-point penalty.
