- camera: Required for uploading photos to your profile or posting in a Language Club, taking and sending photos in chats, video calling, and scanning QR codes.
- Notifications: Used to send notifications about community acceptance, new messages, new followers and their posts, new references, and marketing communications.
- Nearby devices: Bluetooth access is required to connect audio devices during calls or Language Parties.

You can still use Tandem without granting optional permissions, except for features that inherently require them, such as video calls needing camera permission.
